Natural Beauty – Why going ‘Natural’ is more than just a trend

January 24, 2020Seed AdminBlog

Natural and organic beauty sales are predicted to reach a whopping £35bn in the UK this year! The influence of changing consumer habits and attitudes towards skincare and wellbeing means that the natural beauty sector is booming, it’s here to stay and is certainly more than just a trend.

But what exactly are the benefits of going natural? And can plant-based rather than synthetic ingredients really make the grade when it comes to delivering results?

We spoke to Seed’s beauty experts to gain their insights and opinions on why natural beauty is more than just a trend.

According to Seed’s beauty therapist, Teresa Scott, the benefits of natural beauty products and treatments are far-reaching and well documented. Said Teresa, “Our skin reflects both our physical health and mental wellbeing and therefore our beauty regime should help to enhance our bodies and our minds in equal measure.

“To understand the quality of our beauty products we need to look at the ingredients. They should be pure enough to eat. Products containing chemicals such as parabens and preservatives are generally far more astringent to the skin, stripping it of its own natural moisture. They are also far more likely to cause irritations – so, a no-no for those with problem skin such as acne and rosacea.”

Emily Lamont works with Tropic, an award-winning natural skincare and makeup range. Said Emily, “Our skin is the largest organ in the body; in a matter of seconds, what we put on our skin begins to be absorbed (just look at the efficacy of nicotine, morphine or hormone patches used in the medical world for proof of this).

“Therefore, if we use toxic chemical-laden products, we are adding to our already over-burdened bodies. Many ingredients commonly used in standard beauty products can cause sensitivities and allergies, they can disrupt hormones, and some have even been linked to more serious long-term disease.

“And aside from our own health, toxic chemicals can also harm both the planet and marine life when we wash our products down the bathroom plughole.”

So if natural beauty is more than just a trend, what exactly are the benefits of going natural?

  • Natural ingredients such as herbs, roots, plants, flowers and essential oils provide high levels of antioxidants, which are great for those seeking anti-ageing benefits from their products.
  • Natural products are generally great for problematic skin as they don’t contain harmful chemicals, artificial colours, or other bi-products, so are less likely to cause skin irritations.
  • Traditional products and treatments contain chemicals to artificially create a fragrance, where natural products contain their own natural fragrance or are scented with natural essential oils so are purer, less astringent and therefore kinder to skin.
  • Natural brands are known for their transparency and authenticity and are generally more eco-friendly.
  • Natural skin remedies supplied by the earth have been effective for centuries. They are natural, pure and beautiful!

Choosing a natural, non-toxic product means:

  • No artificial ingredients or preservatives
  • No Animal Testing
  • No Controversial Chemicals
  • No Parabens and Phthalates
  • No Synthetic Colours, Dyes or Fragrances

BRANDS OUR EXPERTS USE & RECOMMEND

TERESA SCOTT – I use Cool Herbals from the Ayurvedic Institute and Environ, a leading international and award-winning brand.

What are their benefits?

Based on Ayurveda, one of the oldest holistic healing systems in the world, Cool Herbals is herb-based and comes with extensive training for its wide range of face and body products and treatments. The company’s philosophy is 100% holistic, and analyses a clients’ lifestyle in order to address their specific skin concerns. Due to their gentle nature, they are great for problem skin such as acne, rosacea as well as teen skin.

Based on extensive scientific research and development, Environ is vitamin-based, and is focussed on being environmentally friendly. Environ products and treatments are ideal for those seeking significant anti-ageing results. The products also contain an inbuilt SPF.

EMILY LAMONT – I use Tropic, which offers skincare, body care, haircare, sun care and cosmetics.

What are its benefits?

All Tropic products are both natural and sustainable. Tropic’s infinite purpose is to create a healthier, greener, more empowered world. This is achieved through the fresh ingredients used that enhance our health.

Tropic products are also only ever made to order, so they are as fresh as is possible.

Tropic products are certified Carbon Neutral, vegan and cruelty-free. We are listed as an ethical company on the Good Shopping Guide, and give back through various very generous charitable schemes. In just over 6 years, we have won over 150 industry awards. Some other brands have been around for decades and haven’t scooped half as many accolades.

OUR EXPERTS’ FAVOURITE NATURAL BEAUTY TREATMENTS

TERESA

For those who haven’t tried an Ayurvedic treatment before, my favourite treatment is the Shirodhara head massage with facial – a deeply therapeutic treatment where warm natural oil is left to flow slowly onto the forehead. Not only is it a great beauty tonic for skin and hair, it is also the most profoundly relaxing treatment that melts away stress and tension like no other!

Teresa offer facials, body treatments, massage, IPL face waxing and more from her private space in Beaconsfield.

For more information about Teresa’s clinic, contact teresa@seedwellness.co.uk

EMILY

I offer a 45-minute hydrating facial and hand massage for £40 to enable people to experience the products for themselves. This is a cleansing and soothing facial massage treatment that is tailored to suit all skin types.

I am happy to discuss your skin on a 1-2-1 basis for free and you can always try the products first before you buy or buy with confidence with our 30-day money back guarantee.
