WHAT IS MEDITATION?
Derived from the Latin ‘meditatio’, the word ‘meditation’ means “to think, contemplate, devise or ponder”.
Meditation is a practice that has been around for thousands of years, originating from ancient traditions such as Hinduism and Buddhism before being adopted by most religions around the world.
In recent years, this undisputable mind medicine has entered mainstream European culture through the likes of Hatha Yoga and Transendental Meditation.
Like our bodies, our minds need to truly rest and restore in order to function optimally. Meditation allows the mind to find stillness by focusing on a particular object, thought or activity, thus reaching a state of consciousness that is different to a normal waking state.
Its benefits are well documented, with more people in the West and beyond turning to this discipline as a means to counter the mental effects of stress, anxiety, fatigue and insomnia resulting from our modern day, ‘always on’ lifestyles.
There are many different meditation styles including mindfulness meditation, (observing thoughts while focusing on the breath); movement meditation (ie yoga or simply walking in nature and noticing the sounds around you); mantra meditation, (focusing on a religious or spiritual phrase); transcendental meditation, (sitting quietly and allowing the mind total freedom until it settles); and guided visualisation (where a teacher takes you on a relaxing, mentally visual journey).
