We have an absolute right to take care of ourselves – Reflexology is one way we can

With a life long passion for health and natural healing, Adele Wimsett, firmly believes in an integrated approach to wellness! As a trained Reflexologist, Reiki Master, qualified in Indian Head & Hot Stone Massage and an expert in the healing benefits of essential oils, she certainly practices what she preaches. Here she celebrates World Reflexology Week by discussing how reflexology might just be the answer to the modern pandemic; Stress.

“For those who don’t know, reflexology is a truly, deeply relaxing treatment, which focuses on the feet (although the hands and face can be treated too) and helps bring body and mind into balance. It is a safe, natural therapy that treats the whole person.

As a reflexologist, I work on the theory that the foot is a map of the body and through manipulating specific reflexes (points) on the feet you can bring about balance to both body & mind. It is sometimes referred to as acupuncture without needles.

I personally began my journey with reflexology 11 years ago when I received a treatment myself for health issues and found the results truly transforming.

This week is World Reflexology Week – a week that is celebrated in more than 30 countries around the globe. The theme this year is Stress – something that is having an impact on all of us as our pace of life becomes faster than ever and the relentless white noise of never ending to-do lists leaves our bodies and minds in true discord. Not surprisingly, this is significantly impacting how we are feeling both individually and collectively – to the point FLC (Feel Like Crap Syndrome) is now an actual “thing”!

Stress suppresses our digestive system, stops the release of happy chemicals in the brain, increases heart rate & blood pressure and stops hormone production. This in turn affects sleep, further reducing the body’s capacity to heal itself and therefore increasing our risk of chronic illness.

There are over 7,000 nerve endings in the feet which feed information back to the spinal cord and brain. This stimulation brings about the relaxation response via the nervous system, providing the right environment for change to take place within both body & mind.

Like much of the holistic world, reflexologists are not allowed to suggest they can cure or treat specific ailments. That said, my extensive experience has seen clients experience significant support with managing a myriad of ailments and improving wellbeing. Whilst reflexology can be incredibly supportive for specific ailments, reflexologists are not able to diagnose conditions. Sometimes we pick up imbalances in the body and may feed this back for further investigation.

If we as a society, are expected to manage the pressures and responsibilities that the demands of modern living places upon us, then it is our absolute right to take care of ourselves. Reflexology is one way we can.”
