Ageing Well: Supporting Longevity Through Spinal Health and Nervous System Flow with Jemma Durrant, Spinal Flow Technique Ⓡ Practitioner

January 26, 2026Seed AdminBlogNo comments

Ageing well isn’t something that suddenly becomes important later in life. Many people reach midlife and begin to notice subtle shifts — slower recovery, disrupted sleep, increased stiffness or stress lingering longer in the body. These changes often spark the question: how can I support my body now, so I can continue to feel well in the years ahead?

One important and often overlooked part of that answer lies in the health of the spine and nervous system.

Why the Nervous System Matters as We Age

The nervous system controls and coordinates every function in the body, from movement and balance to breathing, circulation and sleep. The spine protects the spinal cord and allows this communication to flow efficiently between the brain and the body.

Over time, physical strain, emotional stress, injuries and everyday pressures can cause stress to become stored within the nervous system. This may reduce spinal movement and affect how well the body is able to adapt.

Ageing itself is natural. What often creates difficulty is reduced adaptability. When the nervous system is supported, the body is better able to regulate, repair and respond to change.

Common Changes People Experience With Age

As people move through midlife and beyond, certain patterns become more common. While Spinal Flow Technique does not diagnose or claim to treat dis-ease, supporting nervous system regulation can influence how the body copes over time.

Some commonly experienced concerns include:

  • Joint stiffness and reduced mobility, especially through the hips, pelvis and lower back
  • Postural changes and spinal rigidity, often developing gradually over years
  • Circulatory changes, including concerns around blood pressure or chest tension
  • Neck, jaw and head tension, such as stiffness or headaches
  • Sleep difficulties, including trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking unrefreshed
  • Fatigue, brain fog and slower recovery, particularly during periods of ongoing stress

These experiences often develop slowly, which is why supporting the nervous system earlier, rather than waiting until symptoms are entrenched, can be so valuable.

How Spinal Flow Technique Supports the Body

Spinal Flow Technique is a gentle, fast and effective approach that works with the body’s innate intelligence. It does not involve force or manipulation. Instead, it uses specific access points in the sacrum and the cranium to help the nervous system release stored stress.

As stress patterns resolve, movement and communication along the spine can improve. This allows the nervous system to shift out of constant ‘fight or flight’ and into a state of regulation, repair and resilience — essential qualities for ageing well.

It’s Never Too Soon — or Too Late

Spinal Flow Technique is suitable from pregnancy through to later life. Supporting the nervous system earlier can help prevent stress patterns from even starting, while starting later can still support greater ease, comfort and adaptability.

Ageing well isn’t about reversing time. It’s about supporting the body’s ability to respond to life — wherever you are on that journey.
