Embracing the “Good Enough Parent” by Angela Foulds

August 8, 2024Seed AdminBlog

Are you a working parent juggling a demanding career with the endless demands of school holidays? This is a shared struggle among working parents. You’re certainly not alone in feeling the weight of trying to be the perfect parent—meticulously orchestrating kids’ activities and fulfilling your professional responsibilities. This juggling act often leaves us stretched thin, perpetually caught between work commitments and family life.

However, embracing the concept of being a ‘good enough parent’ might offer a refreshing alternative.

In the UK, a study by Working Families highlights this relatable challenge, revealing that 41% of working parents feel burnt out most or all the time. This statistic is not just a number but a mirror reflecting a common experience of exhaustion.

So how can we then gently shift our perspective towards becoming ‘good enough’? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Prioritise Connection Over Perfection: Integrate “10-minute Magic Moments” into your day, where you dedicate your undivided attention to your child, engaging in their chosen activity. These moments foster a deep connection that outweighs any well-planned activity.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Balance your professional and personal life by setting achievable goals. Explore flexible work arrangements like compressed workweeks or remote work options, which can alleviate the pressure of balancing work with family responsibilities
  • Share the Load: Embrace the adage ‘it takes a village’ by coordinating with other parents or family members to share childcare responsibilities. It’s like a babysitting co-op. Or if you have family nearby, now’s the time to cash in all those “I owe you one” favours. Grandparents can be a godsend, and who doesn’t love a visit to Granny’s house?
  • Embrace Imperfection: Demonstrating resilience and flexibility in the face of imperfections teaches our children valuable life lessons. By navigating mistakes with grace and acceptance, we model the beauty of human imperfection and the growth that comes from it.
  • Guilt is Out – Self-Compassion is In: And finally, be kind to yourself. The perfect parent is only a mirage. Practise self-compassion, recognising that a relaxed and compassionate approach to parenting fosters an environment where authentic connections flourish.: Integrate “10-minute Magic Moments” into your day, where you dedicate your undivided attention to your child, engaging in their chosen activity. These moments foster a deep connection that outweighs any well-planned activity.

School holidays, while potentially stressful, can be navigated serenely with the right mindset. By planning strategically, communicating needs, and prioritising well-being—both yours and your family’s—you can embrace the concept of the ‘good enough parent’ and turn school holidays from a period of stress to one of joy and connection.
