Positive Health Tips for Uncertain Times

Naturopath, Emma Burwash, provides her top tips for retaining positive health through these uncertain times.

Nearly a year into these strange times and I see in my clinic every day how unaware people are of the toll it’s taking on both their physical and emotional health.

It’s important that we take heed of the signs and provide ourselves with the adequate support to help us through.

Are you feeling:

  • Tired all the time
  • Anxious
  • Out of control
  • Tearful
  • Fearful
  • Wired but tired

Maybe you have physical symptoms like:

  • Chest tightness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Weight gain
  • Looking pale
  • Sluggish digestion
  • An irregular menstrual cycle
  • Bad PMS/PMT (pre-menstrual tension)

So, what can you do to bolster your physical and mental / emotional health?

  1. Ensure you have protein and fat at each meal
    This is hugely important to ensure you stay optimal in both body and mind. These are a few simple recipe suggestions that will ensure you are getting what you need at breakfast or anytime throughout the day:

    1. Porridge with 1-2 tbsp ground almonds, blueberries and 1tsp coconut cream
    2. Eggs (cooked to your choice) with avocado, olive oil, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms
    3. Beans on toast with 1 tsp olive oil on top
    4. Smoothie made with hemp protein powder, coconut oil or 1⁄2 an avocado & berries
  1. Are you taking supplements?
    You need a good food grade multi vitamin/mineral combo, omega 3’s and 6’s, spirulina, digestive enzymes and probiotics as a good start to nourishing and bolstering your body. Make sure you are buying from high quality brands to aid maximum absorption. Trusted brands I am happy to recommend include Nutrivital, Wild Nutrition, Cytoplan and Good Health Naturally.
  1. Take herbs to balance hormones and regulate blood sugar levels
    Both our hormones and blood sugar levels impact our physical health and mental wellbeing so it’s important we do what we can to keep both in check. In my clinic, I recommend the following herbs: Maca, Ashwagandha, Ginseng, Licorice, Rhodiola, Vitex, Pffafia and Damiana: (health note – these should be prescribed by a naturopath or herbalist)
  1. Stay hydrated!!
    Keep your caffeine consumption in check and make sure you are drinking at least 2L of good quality water every day.
  1. Support your emotional health
    Keep a mindful eye on what’s going on with your emotions. Homeopathy, flower essences (Bach and Australian) and essential oils are all great natural ways you can support your emotional health safely and effectively.
  1. Self-care
    Realise you HAVE to factor in time for YOU, it’s non-negotiable!
