Nicola Martin is a registered nutritional therapist specialising in women’s mental wellbeing, working across South Bucks.
“My mission is to help women, in particular busy mums, adopt long-term nutrition habits that will realistically work for their busy lifestyle on a practical level.
The food we consume has a tremendous impact on how we feel from one day to the next. Mental well-being is critical to support and preserve at any life stage, but particularly during the busy years of parenting, where self-care commonly falls by the wayside.”
I am a huge advocate of simplifying nutrition, and educating on how making small changes can impact your mood and overall sense of vitality. There are no fad diets here, no weighing scales, no complicated jargon and definitely no obsessive health behaviours promoted.
In my day-to-day clinical practice, I adhere to the principles of Functional Medicine. This is an approach that gets to the root cause of an individual’s symptoms or health condition. Once the underlying drivers have been identified, we work together to address them and promote optimal wellness using nutrition and lifestyle strategies.
The focus is also on food enjoyment and happiness with a dash of education thrown in for good measure. Whilst there is an undeniable link between mental health and our diets, and building awareness here is key, I believe we should never feel any kind of negative energy, stress or pressure around the food we eat.
Diet culture, restrictive eating and conflicting dietary advice can be disempowering. And advice found in the media, particularly social media, is often unattainable. Adding the right foods into your diet rather than restricting, learning the right approach that works for YOU and your lifestyle, and embracing ‘food freedom’ more regularly can be far more empowering.
