Ever thought about having a ‘Colonic’? Here’s what you need to know

November 20, 2019Seed AdminBlog

Coffee Enema Colonic Hydrotherapy review – Kate Kirrane

I remember having my first colonic hydrotherapy experience about 15 years ago at an acclaimed health clinic in London. Colonics were trending then and my practitioner was almost as famous as her long list of celebrity clients. She was accomplished, slick in her approach and made the whole experience feel dignified and stress-free.

For those who don’t know, a colonic treatment is where warm filtered water flows under light pressure into the colon through a small tube inserted about an inch and a half into your rectum. The objective is to cleanse your colon of all old compacted waste, which also releases large amounts of gas caused by dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut flora.

Reported benefits include alleviated constipation, a boosted digestive system, weight loss, increased energy, reduced bloating and improved clarity to name a few.

As you can imagine, having a pipe inserted into your bottom is un-nerving and something you wouldn’t necessarily wish to talk about with your friends. Trust, dignity, vulnerability and all sorts of other emotions come into play. So, as I came to realise in that first treatment, the therapist delivering it becomes as important as the procedure itself.

Fast forward 15 years and my next colonic experience was with Debbie Dean of Aqualonix, based in Wooburn Green.  While I was a little apprehensive (it had been a while, afterall), I was immediately struck by Debbie’s passion for and ability to talk about her subject (ie poo) so openly. Her knowledge regarding its direct correlation to our health was both disarming and insightful and made me feel relaxed and confident I was in the hands of a true pro.

This time I was here to experience a colonic with a coffee enema thrown into the mix.  I’d heard a lot about coffee enemas – a type of colon cleanse where the water is infused with brewed, caffeinated coffee, believed to stimulate bile flow and the production of glutathione, a detoxifying antioxidant.

As the coffee is retained in your bowel, the fluid goes through the intestinal wall and portal vein to your liver, where its stimulating effects and healing compounds jumpstart the liver and gallbladder.

As I slipped onto the couch, Debbie explained the treatment step by step. Yes, I’ll admit the insertion process at the beginning is a strange sensation but generally speaking, the treatment felt totally dignified and fine.

Interestingly, Debbie said that her client base is 60-40 (60% women, 40% men), showing that men are as interested in detoxing their insides as women.

After I left, I decided to stay close to a loo for the following hour in case I was caught short, Debbie had told me that my colon muscles were very strong so I may hold onto some water, but most people leave this all behind in her clinic. But other than that, there was no down time.

Overall, I felt so much better after the treatment.  My tummy was flat and my digestive cycle was back on track, if you get what I mean. Most of all, I noticed my energy levels sky rocket.  As someone who has travelled a lot, you never know what may be lurking in your system in the way of parasites and other nasties. Again, it’s not something we talk about. But these things can have a huge negative impact on our health and wellbeing.

Ultimately, despite having moments of discomfort, the benefits far outweigh the cons. I would thoroughly recommend this treatment.

Benefits of a coffee enema colonic:

  • detoxifies the body from the inside out
  • boosts immunity
  • increases energy, a sense of lightness, clarity, focus
  • Removal of old mucus & candida
  • treats autoimmune diseases
  • removes parasites from the digestive tract
  • removes heavy metals from the body
  • treats depression
  • relieves headaches & brain fog

Research

While there’s no scientific evidence that proves or disproves that coffee enemas are helpful to treat any medical condition, there is much anecdotal evidence that shows people feel better as a result.
