Strong Enough to Ask for Help: Men’s Mental Health & the (Neuro)Plastic Brain by Beata Rachowiecka

October 17, 2026Seed AdminBlogNo comments

World Mental Health Day this October is a reminder that caring for our minds should be as routine as brushing our teeth. For men, that message is urgent.

The pressure to show up strong

Around three in four suicides registered in England and Wales in 2024 were men, according to the ONS. Behind that figure is a familiar story: men are less likely to talk about how they feel, less likely to see a GP, and more likely to strive to cope alone.

Many men learn early in their life that strength means holding it together, providing and never being a burden. Friendships often fade after school or starting a family, and work becomes the main source of identity and contact. When stress, loss or low mood hits, there may be no one to tell.

That is why mental health hygiene, the small daily habits that keep the mind steady, may be a good start, beginning as early as in their teens. Up to half of mental health conditions begin before 14, and the coping mechanisms boys learn then often stay with them for decades.

Nutrition: the building blocks of a healthy brain

Mood and cognition are reliant on the right fuel. The brain builds its chemical messengers from food. Without the right raw materials, the physiology behind emotional stability and resilience does not work properly.

  • Protein supplies tryptophan and tyrosine, the building blocks of serotonin and dopamine.
  • B vitamins (B6, B12, folate) are essential helpers in making neurotransmitters.
  • Omega-3 fats from oily fish, walnuts and flaxseed form part of brain cell membranes and facilitate cellular communication.
  • Vitamin D, often low in UK autumns and winters, is linked to low mood.
  • Iron, zinc and magnesium shortfalls can result in fatigue, irritability and anxiety.

What’s more, when under pressure, many men skip meals or lean on convenience food, alcohol and caffeine. A wholefood, Mediterranean-style eating makes for a strong foundation, and worth starting from if feeling under par.

Rewiring from the top down

Once the foundation is in place, it is worth considering working with the latest findings in neurology and neuroplasticity. The Human Connectome Project has mapped how brain regions connect and work together as large-scale networks. These networks dictate how we negotiate our mental and cognitive functioning in our lives. Research building on this work highlights three nets in particular:

  • The default mode network, active when the mind wanders, where rumination and self-criticism tend to loop.
  • The salience network, which flags what feels threatening or important.
  • The executive control network, centred on the prefrontal cortex, which lets us step back, reason and choose a response.

In long-term anxiety and depression, these networks can fall out of balance. Old threat responses fire too easily and rumination drowns out clearer thinking. Many of these patterns were learned early as ways to cope but they may no longer serve us.

Because the brain stays adaptable throughout life, these patterns can be retrained from the top down. Therapies such as quantum healing, CBT, mindfulness practice and regular exercise can help strengthen the executive network’s ability to calm threat responses and reduce rumination. With repetition, new pathways strengthen and old ones fade, creating new ways of viewing life challenges and dealing with them.

Medication typically prescribed by your healthcare provider can help some men through difficult periods, but it is rarely the whole answer and works best alongside lifestyle changes and therapeutic approaches like the ones mentioned above.

Ready to reshape your mental health?

Start with your GP to rule out physical causes and get a diagnosis where needed. Then, if you’re ready to change the patterns holding you back, that’s where I come in.

I work with men (and women) to rebuild from the ground up: correcting the nutritional gaps that undermine brain chemistry, and using top-down techniques to retrain old conditioning. It’s practical, private and judgement-free. Feel free to book a free discovery call (on 07808 297469) to find out how I can help.

Real strength isn’t holding it all in. It’s knowing when to ask for help.
