“We use many of the diagnostic procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Its main strength lies in the unique way the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the methods of treatment applied to suit the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.
Osteopathic practice and techniques will differ between practitioners due to the abundance of osteopathic techniques available and the differences in the physicality of the practitioner, also perhaps any specific area of interest or specialism they may have.
Treated areas cover the head and neck, shoulders, elbows, forearm, wrist, back, hips, knee, lower leg, ankle and feet.
What to Expect
Consultation – Your first consultation with a practitioner at the Chiltern Osteopathic Practice may last up to an hour as it will include a thorough assessment prior to diagnosis and treatment. This allows you plenty of time to discuss your condition and establish what you need from your treatment.
Assessment – In order to be examined properly, you will be asked to undress to your underwear and perform a few simple movements or exercises to assess your body mechanics. Using a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation, to identify any points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body; a diagnosis may then be reached.Occasionally additional investigations such as an X-ray or blood test may be requested. If further investigations or treatment other than osteopathy is indicated the osteopath will refer you to another appropriate professional.
Diagnosis – I will clearly explain your diagnosis, treatment plan and management for you. I will also ensure that you understand all aspects and answer any questions you may have prior to commencing any treatment. You will be encouraged to ask as many questions as you like. Understanding your condition will help you to look after yourself too, sometimes accelerating your recovery.
