Want to optimise your health and happiness this winter? Seed’s 4 Pillars of Health has it covered
With winter looming and so much uncertainty about the future, the one thing we do know for sure is the importance of self-care. But what exactly does it mean to be truly well? And how can we achieve this most effectively?
Over the next four weeks, we’ll be covering the 4 Pillars of Health, ‘Relax, Eat, Move & Flourish’, where our experts will share information about why and how each pillar is pivotal to achieving overall wellness.
While traditionally we have relied on our GP when we are sick, the truth is there is so much we can do to optimise our own health and prevent illness, from alleviating stress and eating well to taking regular exercise and nurturing our mental / emotional health too!
With kids (finally!) back at school and life resuming some sort of normality, there’s no excuse – now is the time to reset your lifestyle and take control of your wellness as we edge towards winter.
Pillar 1 – RELAX
Research shows that taking time out to relax is as important for our health as diet and exercise. Why? Stress triggers the ‘fight flight’ part of our nervous systems, flooding our bodies with negative hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, and leaving us feeling depleted and out of whack. Over time, this can have a serious impact on our mental and physical health, triggering the likes of depression and insomnia and compromising our immune systems so we are more susceptible to illness.
When we do things to help us relax, this stimulates the parasympathetic ‘Rest Digest’ side of our nervous systems, enabling us to release our stress and refuel, rebalance and restore both mentally and physically.
Whatever you do to relax, be it attending a yoga class, participating in sport, gardening, drawing, painting, singing, meditating or whatever else, the trick is to commit to it regularly. This will help to reset your nervous system, bolster your immunity and bring you back into balance in mind, body and soul!
Pillar 2 – EAT
We are what we eat! With all that is going on in our world, the likes of digestive issues, chronic fatigue and mental health problems are rife. So, fuelling our bodies with the right foods, nutrients and supplements is vital to our overall health and vitality. In fact, research shows we can use food to fight and even prevent illness and disease.
Cleansing the internal system has many benefits for mental and physical health. Why? By giving our bodies a rest from toxic foods, replenishing it with vital nutrients and flushing out wastes trapped in the colon, the results can be profound, from boosted energy / vitality to better sleep; and weight loss to improved skin. An internal cleanse also helps gut microbiome, which plays an important role in our health by helping control digestion and boosting our immune system.
Research also shows that our guts and brains are intrinsically linked, and constantly communicating messages to each other. For instance, when we are nervous, we experience butterflies in our stomachs. It also works the other way, where the health of our intestines can alter our emotions and the way we feel. This therefore shows the importance of both gut health and a strong, nutrient-rich diet for body AND mind.
Pillar 3 – MOVE
While we all know that regular exercise aids our health and wellbeing, the fact is that many of us don’t exercise regularly enough. The trick is to find a form of exercise that you like enough to commit to it regularly.
When we move / mobilise our bodies, we unlock physical and mental tension and release happy hormones such as serotonin. Aside of the obvious benefits such as building strength and staying in shape, exercising regularly also boosts our immune systems, thus keeping illness at bay.
Pillar 4 – FLOURISH
Today, particularly with the emergence of Covid, mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are at an all-time high. In fact, one local GP surgery reported that 80% of patient calls received over the last 3 months have been mental health related. Yet, with so little support available beyond prescription pills, many people suffer in silence.
The truth is, there is lots of help out there that is available IF you know where to look.
Whether affected by past events such as loss or trauma; experience hormone imbalance; suffer with general stress and anxiety, the truth is we need to nurture and address our mental and emotional health just as much as our physical health.
While medications such as anti-depressants and sleeping pills have their place, the fact is that even doctors are concerned about the mass over-prescription of these common drugs. The reality is that for some, they provide a quick fix band aid approach when what we really need to do is address the root cause of our issues. This can be done with a wide range of mind therapies such as psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, NLP, CBT, counselling and more. While each has a different approach, their objective is the same – to draw out negative experiences and emotions to the surface so you can address them, let them go and move on.
Also, connecting with our deeper ‘selves’ can be profoundly releasing, therapeutic and transforming. Doing this kind of ‘soul’ work is becoming increasingly popular in the mainstream, as people become more enquiring about their true-life purpose. Being conscious of our inner world simply means having a deeper relationship with ourselves. Having awareness is listening in and connecting to our intuition and inner guidance. The fact is, if we can tap into / better understand / identify our deeper needs, it helps us to discover our true path that will bring us more fulfilment in our lives.
