WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?
The Bowen Technique is one of the newest forms of therapeutic bodywork, becoming popular in the mid 80s. Bowen can help people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. It is primarily used for pain relief – necks, backs and shoulders are very common ailments that respond well to the Bowen Technique. It is also a gentle and relaxing treatment that can melt away stress, tension, anxiety and therefore boost mental health and sleep quality.
Bowen is primarily a remedial therapy that consists of the therapist making a series of moves across muscles, tendons and other soft tissue with their fingers. These moves are made by applying gentle, non-invasive pressure to the soft tissue / myofascia, giving the body an opportunity to restore structural integrity. Effective treatment also restores premium function to the central nervous system, further enabling the body to repair itself.
The body functions as an interrelated whole unit, meaning pain or dysfunction in any one place could easily have started anywhere in the body. The practitioner aims to identify and correct the dysfunction in the body.
“I suffered from back pain for many years and tried all sorts of treatments, lurching from one to the next. I used to feel an improvement but it was always very short-lived. I only had to lift something or go on a slightly longer car journey and my spine felt as though it had become disconnected half way down. One day I went to a herbalist who included what I now know as `Bowen’ work in her session. It was amazing. I could feel my back changing around by itself as I lay on her treatment couch! It was not a magic fix but with time my back became stronger and stronger until I was completely pain-free. This inspired me to train in Bowen Therapy so I could help others suffering like I had.” Barbara Zair, Bowen Therapist
BOWEN THERAPY – REVIEW
“I struggled with recurring shoulder pain that I would ignore to the point I had it hunched up around my ear and could no longer move freely. I found it incredibly debilitating. I went to see Barbara and after the first session I could feel a great improvement. After 3 sessions the pain was gone. I was very impressed and would recommend Barbara to anyone seeking a gentle but highly effective therapy for pain.” Sarah N
